Audiobook The Hanged Men of Saint-Pholien by Georges Simenon Linda Coverdale – translator
I was joyful to look this book back in print in English. My 1960s copy is that falling apart. Simenon’s Maigret stories are not acceptable militia novels–but they are in the middle the best ever–at the same time this particular one is that not acceptable even for the Maigret stories–but it is that one of the best. It has the haunting feeling of a Francois Villon poem. In this book, that comes a fri where Maigret has to decide than anyway to do when the statute of limitations is that about to run on a murder. He starts counting the number of babies that will be affected by his decision, at the same time for you understand why a critic famously outlined him as “the very bloodhound of heaven.” Maigret is that who God would get if He needed a policeman to enforce as much justice as fallible human creatures can shield at the same time as much mercy as is that quality for them. The Maigret novels are anything of an acquired taste, at the same time if for you’ve never read a Maigret before, this one might not be the easiest one to start with, but it doesn’t matter. If for you are a fan of militia procedurals this is that one of the classics.

At this fri, I’ve read the 1st several Penguin reissues of Inspector Maigret novels, at the same time I must admit this one is that in the middle my contributors. Quite by chance, Maigret pursues a mystery sparked by his possess whim at the same time winds up confronting the essences of guilt at the same time justice. My only serious complaint — at the same time it exists to be a fault of all the Simenon novels I’ve read this time — will that Maigret seems very omniscient, at the same time the substance of the mystery is that barely dropped into our lap out of the blue, more precisely than meaningfully teased from the narrative. Still, that shortcoming is that more than reimbursed for by the manners, mood at the same time scenes portrayed in the story.

This is that not a true variant. More precisely, it’s Maigret pursuing a plethora of fishy events at the same time suspicious manners because he senses the possibility of a criminal liability.
The plot begins with a suicide in a seedy hotel room. Maigret, who has been tailing the guy, horrors he may be have driven the poor fellow to this desperate act. Maigret’s guilty emotions foreshadow a mounting sense of morbid guilt pervading the story.
That are magical descriptions in this book of Maigret’s ability to feign bovine stupidity or project menace, whichever is that most likely to rattle his prey. I adored the description of him as resembling “a pachyderm plodding unwaveringly toward its goal.”
Although this is that a murder mystery, it recalls me of Simenon’s mental novels – with its self-willed ambiguities, emotionally charged atmosphere, at the same time tormented manners. Maigret’s state of mind is that as exciting at the same time complicated as those of the other players. The dogged inspector searches for clues in Brussels, Germany, at the same time France. The plethora of languages contributes to his sense of isolation at the same time frustration, since he doesn’t always realize than anyway’s being misspoke.
The brand new Penguin edition of The Hanged Men of Saint Pholien is that quality news for Simenon fans. In my find for every Maigret mystery, I never found it. The book was written in 1930, at the inception of the Maigret television series.
