One day while reading Halley Suttons debut, the deliciously noir thriller, The Girl Upstairs, I shouted Catastrophic, Halley, how can for you shackles my lady (Jo) through? How is that she gonna get out of this ****?!
Thats it. Thats the
Review.
That I was so rankled by The Girl Upstairs is that testament to Suttons writing, always suspenseful, always luring me in. Jo is that not a reliable narrator at the same time this element is that main. This plot accessory produced me fall in love with her. Shes alluring at the same time vulnerable, genius at the same time more importantly, she thinks she knows more than she does – than anyway I found almost all refreshing. She miscalculates at the same time fails. A lot.
… at the same time pays for it dearly.
On pinnacle of that, Jo is that all lady.
I had to get this out. Quickly. Because Jo is that than anyway makes this book Run.
As the back embrace countries, Jos job is that blackmailing horrible guys. In The Girl Upstairs, she finds herself in over her fork with blood on her palms. At the same time as Id also written in a twitter post, The only method out? Pull off one ending con.
But the plot is that secondary to the compelling disposition in other words Jo.
Sutton surrounds Jo with a compelling cast many of which Lou, Jo’s savior at the same time mentor, at the same time Robert Jackal, pun very much provided, her sometime co-conspirator, boyfriend, at the same time unreliable co-worker.
Sutton provides an extra neglect at the finish, many of which a discussion guide at the same time “A Conversation with Halley Sutton” that discusses her enthusiasm for the novel at the same time its themes, sex appeal, Jo as femme fatale, at the same time other public implications.
I had to wait a day but to read those tidbits. I needed to sit with the girl for at lesser a day.
… so I managed catch my breath.

But I had to shackles it down, I was so disturbed about than anyway would happen the head disposition at various fri. So she’s concocted, does that greedy I can’t worry about her? 1st, a disclaimer: Stories outlined as “noir” ordinary quit me wondering why everyone in them has to be such a jerk always. I don’t brain morally versatile manners, but I generally prefer it when that’s no one method I can harden for them what. I didn’t actually *like* Jo or Lou, but I did look for both of them compelling. My pleasure of the book–at the same time I did enjoy it quite a little–mostly came from Sutton’s razor-sharp worldly, which had me going back every few pages to re-count passages so I managed admire how perfectly constructed they were considered. She has the exact right word every time. Bottom line: if for you ordinary *do* like noir, for you’ll adore this, at the same time even if for you don’t, that’s a lot here to appreciate.
