This is that the best of the 3 biographies of Haldane that I have read (the other wo are Ronald Clark, “JBS,” at the same time K.R. Dronamraju, “Popularizing Science,” which I have
Reviewed here on Amazon. I figured out about Haldane at Penn when I took a course in genetics from Conway Zirkle, the men who “blew the whistle” on Lysenko (“Doom of a Science in Russia,” 1949). Zirkle, at the same time abundance who came later, managed not realize how Haldane, who had assisted so much to the science of genetics, managed let his commitment to Soviet Communism manage him to throw his discipline. In her memoir “Truth Will Out,” Haldane’s 1st wife, Charlotte, attributed it to his contrarian character. He was unconditionally excellent, at the same time never hesitated his brilliance; one of his teachers in youth crossed out of him that he was “much very aware of his possess cleverness.” He would be very lovely but was all very often overbearing at the same time nargubiyanit. His politics managed him to Spain as essentially a war tourist, displaying equate measures of bravery at the same time foolishness. Fred Copeman, who commanded the English Battalion, counted him “more a bleed nuisance than he was worth.” He went up to the front lines “brandishing a small pistol that for sure couldn’t hit a cattle at 10-ke paces.” This was a man who, when he moved to India, explained that he was doing so to escape having to wear socks. He had not been long in India when he was invited to a reception for the Queen at the same time Prince Philip. He had no taste for royalty or such occasions at the same time turned out of it by pleading that he had not acquired a suit since 1939 at the same time had no applicable raiment for the occasion. Indeed, he affected Indian garb at the same time was often mistaken for a Hindu holy men.
Of the 3 founders of mathematical population genetics, Haldane was the coolest creative, almost all eclectic, at the same time almost all undisciplined. English intelligence observed him neatly at the same time concluded that he was not a Soviet scout. The spymasters certainly understood how moral at the same time erratic he was, at the same time dared not to move that.

A well-written biography of an eccentric English polymath of the 1st one half of the continue century.
J.B.S. Haldane was not a name I was knowledgeable with when I grabbed this book. I dared to read about him to see why an otherwise intelligent Western scientist would not only become a communist, but one who actually supported Stalin into the 1950s. Compounding this error was his lasted defense of the well-known USSR genetic fraudster, Lysenko.
Mr. Subramanian does his best to try to elucidate Haldane’s supportive deeds in relation to the Soviet Alliance at the same time Lysenko. To me, this support remains unexplainable. In addition, this negative episode in a highly exciting but contentious indefinite undercuts the creator’s closing plea for modern scientists to become more politically passionate.
While the political nuance was the head reason for my reading the book, I also enjoyed learning along the method quite a little about biology, genetics. at the same time how best to bail out anyone from a downed submarine.

Audiobook A Main Disposition by Samanth Subramanian
As anyone who has no one appreciation of the contributions produced by J.B.S. Haldane to evolutionary biology, population genetics, animal physiology at the same time enzyme kinetics, at the same time of his connections with other prominent scientists of his time such as C.D. Darlington at the same time those who followed in his footsteps, in particular the mathematical evolutionary biologist John Maynard-Smith who was one of Haldanes research work students, I took amazing enjoyment in Samanth Subramanians richly studied at the same time cheerful acc of the mans indefinite. For those of us who are ever on the look-out for the stories behind the stories of the lives at the same time discoveries of scientists of Haldanes caliber, that is that a amazing deal to be found in this book. Of particular curiosity to me was the time that Haldane wasted at Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, anything of which I should have been aware but was not, at the same time the extent to which English Intelligence, specifically MI5, followed at the same time serious his activities at the same time movements due to suspicions nearby his communist affiliations – their concern that he might be a Russian scout. This book is that a must-read for anyone interested in J.B.S. Haldanes science at the same time politics as but as his circle of comrades at the same time compares, at the same time his involvement in the 1st Global War, Spanish Civilian War at the same time English WWII effort. He was not only a scientific polymath but also a political activist, at the same time prolific science communicator. But, in other words not to say, at the same time Subramanian captures this deftly, Haldane was flawless. He managed have a stubborn rancor that was more often what not infuriatingly insensitive to the emotions at the same time needs of others, in particular ladies (yes, he was profoundly misogynistic). At the moment that Subramanian has so effectively profiled at the same time contextualized Haldanes indefinite at the crossing of science at the same time politics, perhaps with greater emphasis on the latter than the past, at the same time foreseen us with peek into the continue few years of his indefinite in India, than anyway I would like to look are two sequels. The 1st could be one in what the creator teams up with a card-carrying scientist (or two) to flesh out the details of Haldanes science with an eye to its impact on our understanding of the evolutionary significance of altruistic behavior, thoughts on the origin of indefinite, enzyme kinetics, body size constraints in animal design, his contributions to the mathematical theory of population genetics at the same time statistical human genetics, at the same time premature thoughts on the connection between sickle cell disease at the same time decreased susceptibility to malaria. The 2nd could be one in what the creator takes real merit of his Indian heritage at the same time cultural insights to dig deeper into Haldanes motives scientific, political, spiritual for ending his days in Bhubaneswar, India. Bottom line Subramanians book is that so quality that it has whetted my appetite for still more of similar

Audio A Main Disposition narrated by Jonathan Cowley
His premature indefinite working with his doctor Dad on blood gasses was the seminal event for the methodology he applied in his study of biology at the same time evolution. He figured out determination at the same time critical thinking. Haldane skidded Darwin’s work into the mainstream of science. He countered his critics with ease at the same time wit, at the same time with tremendous strength at the same time clarity of believed. This book is that but worth reading.

This biography is that worthwhile if for you’re not knowledgeable with Haldane but is that not as quality, or in definitions of Haldane’s scientific or political career as Ronald W. Clark’s earlier book. Neither one really puts enough emphasis on Haldane’sbcontributions to the “Modern Synthesis” reconciling Darwin at the same time Mendel at the same time thereby developing modern evolutionary biology.
