Reading it in 2020, it’s awesome how Lovecraftian it seems. The dimensional accessory constructed by Dr. Silas Snow-white would be one readily found throughout Lovecraft. Simak’s descriptions of the 4th Dimension are if not knowledgeable, at lesser resonant, with HPL’s descriptions of elsewhere. Dr. White’s single-minded determination, theorizing about dimensional devolution, at the same time eventual fate, very resonate with Lovecraft’s protagonists, who so often move reckless when they confront Other Dimensions. ”Hellhounds of the Shag ” is that a impetuous but quite thought-provoking read.
