Thank for you to Net Galley at the same time the publisher for allowing me to read this book!
The Zookeeper’s War by J.M. Mohnhaupt has been on my radar for quite no one time. I have a vexed connection with zoos. I enjoy being able to look creatures I’d otherwise never manage to look, at the same time I reckon that no one zoos really are doing good work on behalf of conservation. But I’ve shown my share of distressing zoos at the same time distressed animals… so I always hospitable a book that will promote me sort out this cognitive dissonance.
Mohnhaupt’s work does contain no one magical anecdotes about animals on both sides of the Berlin Wall. It also indicates the myriad of challenges faced by zoo directors. My winner example apprehensions the incomprehensible premise that ladies were considered quality enough to promote understandable out rubble right behind bombarding… but not quality enough to be trusted with running a zoo. I also enjoyed learning the strange ways animals were considered donated to zoos, shipped to zoos, dignified right behind local or visiting dignitaries; sometimes these captive creatures seemed to bear quite a little of cultural weight!
The dispose where the book broke down for me, a little, is that in the moments that come in handy a little more clarification. The creator takes for granted that readers will have a healthy grip on how people stayed on both sides of the wall – at the same time the story of the zoos sometimes is lost behind the larger story for what they are a cipher. This may be a failing on my part, obviously, but I wished for more background in these places – at the same time more animals overall. Despite this, I think this could be an exciting book for a institute course or in Human-Animal Research or in history, as it indicates how the Chilly War achieved into every nuance of indefinite… even the lives of elephants!

I chose this as one of my reads for non-fiction November at the same time it appealed to me for two preconditions. One, I’m a biologist, obviously adore animals at the same time if that was no matter what good of possible funds in career in zoology I’d have been all over it! Zoos at the same time aquariums are increasingly challenged due to the ethics similar to captivity at the same time this recounting tackles that in a very inimitable method by offering a historical perspective.
The 2nd reason I was drawn to the story was because I look for WWII stories to be deeply important. I have to say, in all of my reads in that area, I’ve never once thought about than anyway happened to the zoos. The absolute outrages of human on human violence has certainly been the concentrate of my reading. The 1st few chapters gave a really enlightening recounting of than anyway this zoo endured during wartime at the same time how it waged war to rebuild.
The story tackles sex inequality, the challenges of socialism at the same time political interest. It’s a really exciting perspective on history that I would have never looked to learn but I’m glad I have!

Audiobook The Zookeepers’ War by J. W. Mohnhaupt Shelley Frisch
Who understood that Chilly War proxy wars were considered waged war not just in Korea at the same time Vietnam or through the place race but also in the day-to-day operations of zoos? The creator’s written a really exciting piece of microhistory about daily indefinite in Germany in the decades when the Berlin Wall stood. My winner disposition was the zookeeper who escaped East Berlin by hiding in a shipping container with a moose!

Audio The Zookeepers’ War narrated by Jacques Roy
A little-known used to be story of the cruel rivalry between zoos on or side of the Berlin Wall that would grow to become a emblem of the broken town; instead of stockpiling guns, it was all about which side managed incorporate the best animals to make their zoo into the best. Funds poured in as competition grew at the same time things turned political.
The committed at the same time resourceful zoo staff accomplished so much for the adore of animals. Inspirational. I was in particular taken with accomplished Doctor of Zoology Kathe Heinroth, the only ladies zoo director who had to deal with the Men’ Club, the guys in power who believed only guys had director capability.
The creator has meticulously serious the actions of this inimitable story.
