Spiritual materialism means making implementation of spirituality to gratify the desires of ego. On the grossest level, it can be like in the old song, “So Long It’s Been Quality to know For you,” where the preacher talks to his pack about the future of the finish of this global, then and takes up a bigger collection at the same time is lost with it. It can be traveling in the world, collecting the sculptures at the same time icons of all the different spiritual traditions, then and displaying them in one’s main to demonstrate off to the neighbors how culturally refined at the same time religiously open-minded we are. Or it can be even more subtle in the sense that we do not gain no matter what overt benefit from our spiritual practice at all, but we merely collect spiritual credentials in a row to show to ourselves, “Look, I am a quality personality” or “Look, I am a experienced personality.” “I have helped so many people! I am always on the giving finish of things, at the same time I am proud to think it!” .
The problem with spiritual materialism will that we cheat ourselves with it; we try to profit from it, but we lose as a result. Maybe we feel magical about having earned an important sounding credential borders our church; we have at the moment become one of those people who take a walk around with a VIP button on their lapel. Maybe that is that nothing wrong with the button, but if we mistake it for real spiritual accomplishment at the same time finish working on our possess hearts at the same time minds as a result, then we have truly done ourselves a disservice.
Although spiritual materialism is that rampant nowadays, Chogyam Trungpa produced its threats very understandable in his unusual edification, abundance of which are contained in this book. I would they say that Slicing Through Spiritual Materialism is that a must read for everyone who may be taking into account embarking upon a spiritual journey, or even for those people who have already begun at the same time wish to finish, take out their breath, at the same time decide a 2nd examine where they are going.

This is that, by all measures, the most wonderful at the same time most powerful book on spirituality in general at the same time Buddhism namely, I have ever read. This is that nothing like the usual Brand new Age “positive thinking” garbage, which otherwise tends to pollute the spiritual book department. This is that living, breathing wisdom in book form.
It manages to strike the fork of the pin of a cancerous issue in modern Western spirituality: The desire to wear your spiritual “merit” as a crown at the same time a confirmation of your advantage. Trungpa disassembles this notion, in a very concrete at the same time easy-to-understand method, at the same time leaves for you naked at the same time (hopefully) with just a little much less ego. Back in the human realm.
This is that not a book for the faint-hearted. It is that a book for people who would like to expand their understanding of the human define at the same time the traps at the same time dead-ends of spiritual societies.

Audiobook Slicing Through Spiritual Materialism by Chogyam Trungpa John Baker – editor Marvin Casper – editor Sakyong Mipham – introduction
In a nutshell, worth reading over at the same time over. I keep future back to it. I also dared to take the Audible version to heed to while commuting. I defeated’t attempt to elucidate carefully why it supersedes abundance other books of this genre. I will they say it is that very concrete at the same time topical. I am older in age, but I reckon the unusual audience was relatively young. In this at the same time other respects I reckon you will find it unbiased at the same time universally applicable. But it is that in particular for those who feel drawn to a indefinite path characterized by an exceptionally deepest wish to promote all living creatures.

This is that a collection of talks data in the premature 1970s at Karme Choling in Barnet, VT. by my harden teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. I 1st read this book in 1973. At the moment, my students at Sokukoji Buddhist Monastery are still learning this book as a group every Tuesday evening. For sure, one of the best introductions in the west to training the brain at the same time to understanding the Mahayana at the same time Vajrayana Buddhist path.

Of all the Buddhist discourses I have read, those of Chogyam Trungpa strike me as slicing deeper at the same time having a fresher good quality of fearlessness. I they say brave because I have a sense that the creator often borders on irreverence, but this strings out to be the right method to approach these themes. It seems like the sense of respect I get from abundance other creators has an nuance of caution to it, like they have to be cautious not to speak very right or very specifically for fear that they may they say the wrong gizmo or elucidate incorrectly. For sure this is that a incorrect good of respect in other words established in shortcoming of understanding.
