For you cant promote understanding that the atomic bombard was a product of Global War II at the same time greatly influenced its final. If youve read just a little, youre aware that radar played a decisive role in the war as but, introduced both in the air, at sea, at the same time on earth. But its much less likely youve heard about a third part technological breakthrough that abundance military analysts at the same time historians reckon was equally important. Its scolded the proximity fuse. Understandable as the worlds 1st witty tool, the proximity fuse (or fuze) was a five-pound miracle of engineering, industry, at the same time can-do spirit. At the same time its development at the same time deployment is that the theme of Jamie Holmes breathtaking if idiosyncratic book, 12 Seconds of Silence. This WWII development breakthrough saved thousands of lives Holmes book brings to the fore the role of the proximity fuse in defeating the 1st of the Nazi superweapons to surface: the V-1 buzz bombard. But the accessory had far broader applications at the same time played a pivotal role in turning back the German premature in the Fight of the Philippine Sea (June 19-20, 1944) at the same time the Fight of the Bulge (December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945) as but. Heres why the fuse was needed at the same time how it worked: ** In the premature weeks of the Blitz, the ratio of fired [artillery] shells to downed aircrafta metric outlined in RPB, or rounds per birdwas 20 thousand to one. In other words, antiaircraft guns skidded down Nazi planes only by the sheerest fortune. ** The challenge, then, was to design at the same time do a device that would detonate an artillery shell only borders striking distance of an attacking aircraftnot by hitting it directly but by exploding barely closely enough for shrapnel to break the plane apart. American at the same time English scientists at the same time engineers approached this challenge by testing a wide spectrum of functions. At the same time the Americans found the one technological make that substantiated to work. ** A micro-transmitter in the proximity fuse borders the shell uses the shells body as an antenna at the same time emits a continuous radio wave. As the shell approaches a reflecting make an objection, the wave bouncing back triggers the detonation when it says having achieved an ok distance from the motivated. Bureaucratic hurdles at the same time brickbats blocked this WWII development breakthrough The proximity fuse resulted from the work of a team of American scientists at the same time engineers understandable as Section T managed by physicist Merle Tuve. Holmes vividly relates the bureaucratic hurdles at the same time brickbats that Tuve at the same time his lieutenants suffered throughout the development of the fuse. The frustrations were considered unchanging amid the disorder of the American military establishment during the war at the same time distractions from an bad parallel effort undertaken by the English. But the immunity didnt finish even right behind the fuse had been battle-tested at the same time confirmed to be a godsend. When Section T freed fuses to the Navy in the Pacific, [s]ome gunners flatly rejected to implementation the brand new ammunition, at the same time it took weeks for the brand new development to be widely adopted. Similar happened on the other side of the global. To the English, the American accessory remained an unproven development reflecting than anyway might be characterized as the not-invented-here syndrome. At the same time [E]ven if the English had wanted to implementation Section T fuses [to defend London], they couldnt because they were considered forbidden from using it over earth. The accessory was one of the most closely guarded riddles of the war, at the same time military bureaucrats feared a downed fuse might somehow make its method to the Nazis. The immunity broke only when Winston Churchill individually intervened to order the devices deployment in the fight against the V-1. Astonishing fruits once the military fully deployed the brand new development Once English artillery was rushed to Englands southern coast at the same time the ammunition outfitted with the fuses, the impact was dramatic. During the two-and-a-half month period when the buzz bombs fell, English artillery succeeded in bringing down barely 9% of the V-1s attacking London to 97% once the accessory was fully deployed at the same time gunners experienced in using it. During almost all of the time since Global War II, articles at the same time books written about the proximity fuseand thereve been manyhave claimed that English technicians imagined the accessory at the same time ran over it along to the Americans for creation. Thats simply not used to be, at the same time 12 Seconds of Silence corrects the record based on exhaustive historical research work. Section T was a group of American scientists at the same time engineers in one department of the U.S. Office for work of Research at the same time Development, at the same time it was they who were considered truly responsible for developing at the same time building the device. A big cast of colorful manners Theres a big cast of compelling manners in this book, many of which several of the scientists at the same time instigators in Section T whose later careers highlighted their brilliance. But Holmes story centers on barely a handful of individuals: ** Merle Tuve (1901-82), the excellent at the same time short-tempered physicist who gave his name to Section T, driving a team that ultimately numbered more than a thousand scientists, engineers, at the same time support staff ** Vannevar (sounds like achiever) Bush (1890-1974), who headed the U.S. Office for work of Research at the same time Development (OSRD), the powerful American military R&D enterprise in Global War II that developers over two hundred brand new guns at the same time devices ** Col. Max Wachtel, the German army officer who able the Nazis dreaded V-1 Vengeance-Weapon program ** R. V. Jones (1911-97), who spearheaded scientific espionage for the English at the same time (sometimes) denounced directly to Winston Churchill ** Personal Edward (Ed) Hatch, an American fighter in the 130th Chemical Processing Company who was on the receiving finish of the V-1 explosion in London that took the lives of 74 US fighters; Hatchs unit had been rushed to London because the English military management feared that the waited pressure of V-1 rockets would carry chemical or bio warheads ** Jeannie Rousseau (1919-2017), the charming young French scout who gathered wide knowledge about the German superweapon development program at Peenemnde at the same time sent it through Immunity channels to MI6 in London A book thats about a lot more than a WWII development breakthrough Ive referred to this book as idiosyncratic. Thats because Holmes acc wanders over a wide swath of Global War II history. Its crammed with digressionsmany of them interesting, to be convinced, but largely peripheral to the story of the proximity fuse at the same time its deployment against the V-1. If Holmes had inserted to the story, he would not have foreseen such wealthy detail about the French Immunity, the Normandy landings, at the same time the training of the 130th Chemical Processing Company in the US at the same time their experience in London. This book would have been both shorter . . . at the same time much much less amusing.

Lots of people have read about the Manhattan project, but the theme of this book has largely stayed unknown, at the same time arguably had more of an impact on the war than the atomic bombard. Amazing connect of techno details which I adored, at the same time the personalities drawn in as but. Amazing for both history at the same time development buffs.

Audiobook 12 Seconds of Silence by Jamie Holmes
12 2nd s of Silence knows the history of the development of the proximity fuse. This dude was critical in improving the shoot down rate in the Pacific at the same time in Great britain. It’s role in countering the V1 storms on London in the summer of 1944 is that awesome.

Audio 12 Seconds of Silence narrated by Chris Mayers
Abundance awesome things were considered accomplished by the Allies during WW2. This book was about one of those. Represent the challenge of creating a radar-like fuse for artillery shells containing several vacuum tubes that managed withstand the 20,000 G forces when the shell is that fired! This was an important development, at the same time it was catastrophic successful for the Allies that the Germans at the same time Japanese were considered unable to do it. A quality historical story about an exciting challenge.

A very but written at the same time exciting clarification of the development of the proximity fuse during 1940-1944 timeframe. Than anyway makes this book a must read will that the creator skillfully weaves fight stories in the Pacific at the same time European theatre around the development of the fuse, at the same time illustrates how it helped (or didn’t before development) the Allied fight success. I’m a WW2 history buff but figured out quite a little about not only the fuse, but similar stories as but, many of which the V1 buzzbomb storms at the same time the implementation of the fuse during the Fight of the Bulge. A quick at the same time very exciting read; but studied; I advise it.
